As an adolescent, your dog will begin testing behaviors to see what works and what doesn't. This is a critical time in a dog's life and good training now will help him or her develop into a well-mannered and polite adult companion pet. Our philosophy is not to look for behaviors to "correct." We focus, instead, on rewarding desirable behaviors, ensuring that your dog will be motivated to choose only those appropriate behaviors.

We try to duplicate real-life situations in our training classes. For example, you will learn how to get your dog to calmly walk by your side while another dog walks by in the opposite (or same) direction. Your dog will also learn to come directly to you while another dog is headed toward its owner running close by (recall relay races). Your dog will learn to lie down and stay while you leave the room (maybe you have to go outside and get the mail, or you'll have to answer the door). We will teach your dog to "go to your mat," so that he has a designated area to lie down and relax while (1) you're cooking and eating your meals, (2) you're watching TV, or (3) you just want some well-deserved quiet, down-time.

Part of a class is devoted to teaching our human students all about dog body language. Canines have a unique way of communicating with each other. Dogs will never understand English! However, we can gain a much better understanding of what they're trying to tell us and other dogs by studying their body language. When you complete this class, your dog will benefit from learning appropriate, rewardable behaviors, but you will also benefit by gaining a much clearer picture of how dogs communicate and what motivates learning.
